Early Summer Points Race 8

14th June 2021

Scorpion 1052 does well. The afternoon race was better. The tide was still coming in but there were shallow areas of the river to exploit and the sea breeze had established itself at about 10mph. We started OK close to the club to be out of the tide, Chris Saunders was just in front. Elsewhere there were other Blazes and possibly a Laser or 2. We beat up the shallows to round Hoo Ness West Cardinal to starboard but kept inshore to get up tide before we stepped out into the main stream to round 30 to port and then headed back in near Hoo Ness to stay in the shallows along the Hoo Island shore. Looking around it was clear Chris had got away but every other boat was a long way behind. I think we may have run aground up that shore but its hard to say because the boat still goes forward as the mud is the consistency of custard. We tacked anyway. I was concerned for the rudder as when I pulled the string to get it down it came away in my hand and so was only held down by the tightness of the nut. We made it to 27 and then 26 and bore away to 28 and put the kite up. There is so much spare haliard in the bottom of the boat and the cleats and blocks are tired and not that well sited its a difficult hoist and I my steering suffers. That's fine in 10 mph - it might be different in 20! We rounded up nicely at 28 and headed across the tide to the Hoo Island side to tack up the shallows again to 27 and 26 and then another run down to 28 and onwards towards the club line. A nice broad reach with the kite and probably too broad for the Blaze behind which was Andy Gibbs in 696 who is a light wind speed demon. However our kite kept us going well and we finished behind Chris but in front of everybody else which will probably reflect in the results since our handicap is in our favour over the Blazes but I suspect not enough to make an impression on Chris Saunders. So well done Chris but well done Alison it was cramped up in the front most of the time but her crewing skills are certainly all there. We both enjoyed the race and to get a good result a bonus.
