Cruising
Trips up and down the River Medway
Castles, Submarines, Seals, Porpoises, and Shipwrecks!
The club organizes dinghy cruises in addition to the race programme. Cruises are timed around suitable tides are aimed to take members in their dinghies to places on the river where the normal racing does not venture.
This can include sailing up to Aylesford where the low bridge limits further access, and around the creeks of the estuary closer to the sea. The coastal environment of the Medway estuary is of international importance for many migrating birds and full of industrial archaeology not accessible except by boat.
Dinghies joining a cruise should have a suitable rope for towing (known as a painter), a paddle, bailer, anchor with at about 20 metres of line, adequate buoyancy, and buoyancy aides for all onboard. The helm and crew should be familiar with righting the boat in the event of capsize.
All cruises are accompanied by a safety boat with instructions being issued in advance of a cruise.
